For Schools

The Stella Schools Program seeks to inspire change and empower students – girls and boys alike – by encouraging them to critically engage with their own reading habits and imagine a future not limited by their gender.

The Stella Schools Program offers a range of events and sessions to inspire conversation about gender, language and power in your school community.

A Stella Schools event at your school could be:

  • a school visit by a notable Australian writer
  • a panel discussion on gender and diversity featuring a number of Stella Schools Ambassadors
  • a hands-on writing workshop for students
  • a keynote address at an assembly or other important event
  • an ‘in-conversation’ event open to parents and students on a topic relevant to your school community
  • a professional development session for English teachers and librarians

Let your students be inspired by Australian women’s writing, and help them to build their own brilliant careers. Get in touch via the contact form at the bottom of this page to talk with us about the right Stella event for your school.

You can also register your students for Girls Write Up – our daylong mini-festival that teaches empowerment through writing and sharing stories. Read more about Girls Write Up and find dates for your state here.

The Stella Schools Program can arrange a number of different sessions for your school or library that will encouarge teenagers to engage with ideas of language, gender and power. Several of our most popular event formats are outlined below, but if you have specific requests or requirements, please contact us to discuss them.

A Stella Panel, hosted by Stella Schools Manager Bec Kavanagh, can be tailored to look at specific themes relevant to your school’s students through the lens of gender stereotyping and unconscious bias. We will customise the panel and assist with securing participating writers based on your requirements. COST: $650 + GST.

Invite one of our ambassadors to talk about gender as it relates to their own work and career, and engage your students with the themes of gender, language and power in an intimate workshop that explores these issues in a practical way. Perfect for single classrooms or smaller groups of students. COST: varied – contact us for more information.

Professional Development

Professional development sessions are available to teaching staff at schools. These sessions, held by Bec Kavanagh, Stella Schools Program Coordinator, in Victoria; and Emily Maguire, Stella Schools Ambassador, in New South Wales, will introduce and expand on the ideas and activities encompassed in the Stella Schools booklet, and suggest ways to incorporate them into the classroom. COST: varied – contact us for more information.

Register your interest to host a panel as part of our provocation series. Members of the school community and members of the public alike are invited to attend provocation events, which are held in the evening. To find our more, see our Provocations page. COST: $650 + GST.
